Knowing your body shape is vital. So what are you? Well we are all fruit bar one. Pear, Apple, Strawberry, Banana or Hourglass.
It won’t matter whether you are a Size 0 (I wish) or a Size 28, whatever you are you will always belong to a fruit family or hourglass. What we need to do is to learn how to balance out our bodies to create the hourglass look. That does not mean the hourglass body is the best, in fact us girlies always think the other man’s grass is always greener. All body shapes have their own plus and cons. The easiest body shape to dress is the banana that is what most model shapes are. So if this is you then you are a lucky girl.
A quick guide and a few helpful tips.
Pear. Beautiful womanly figure. Great booty. You carry you weight around your bottom, hips and thighs. You have a tinier waist and usually a flat stomach (jammy). You may have a smaller bust. Your top half is smaller than your bottom half.
Stars– Jennifer Lopez, Beyonce and Kate Winslet.
Best – Detail to be on your top half to balance out your fabulous bottom. Pears love bold bright coloured tops, large collars, shoulders and sleeves. A-Line dresses, wide leg flat fronted trousers.
Underwear – Padded and/or push up bras. Thigh control pants.
Avoid – Tight fitting, cargo or bulky trousers and skirts. Bright colours, ruffles or tiered items on your bottom half.
Apple. You are well proportioned however you carry a little more weight around your middle. You have amazing legs and/or bust (very lucky). So make the most of these. You want to avoid making a statement around your middle as this is your biggest point.
Stars – Catherine Zeta Jones, Lorraine Kelly, Jennifer Hudson, Drew Barrymore.
Best. Detail around your bust or your legs. Empire line tops and dresses (that’s the area right underneath the bust). Wrap dresses. Boot cut, flat fronted trousers or jeans. Asymmetric (very fashionable for 2012) skirts or dresses. Embellished tops or skirts.
Underwear – Push up bra and a body shaper to cinch in the waist.
Avoid. Belts and waist line cinches. Shapeless shift dresses. Pleats and gathers across the tummy area. Boxy and puffa jackets.
Strawberry. You are blessed with a large bust and/or great shoulders, a very small waist and hip area. What would really suit you is detail around your bottom half.
Stars – Dolly Parton, Pamela Anderson, Jordan, Charlize Theron.
Best. A-Line skirts, wide leg trousers. V-necks and wraps as tops. Bright colours on your bottom half. Tiered or ruffle skirts. 1950s dresses.
Underwear – If you have a bigger bust then maybe choose a minimising bra. Butt lifting knickers to give you a J-Lo bum.
Avoid Ruffles, embellished big lapel tops. Skinny jeans or pencil skirts.
Banana. Most people including me would kill for your shape. You are straight up and down and have no area which needs to be minimised. However, you do want to create curves and this can be done with the right clothing.
Stars – Kate Moss, Fern Britton, Cat Deeley, Rachel Hunter.
Best – You are about the only shape that can get away with polo necks. You want to cinch in that waist. You can do this with tailored jackets and belts. You can wear frills and ruffles as tops. Skinny jeans. Lovely linens.
Underwear – A great bra, if you have a smaller bust then one with padding and/or push up. A waist cincher or corset to give you those curves.
Avoid Not a lot really. Very full or puffy skirts. Baggy tops won’t give you a waist.
Hourglass. Great waist. Top and bottom half in proportion. A sexy body shape so you need to be careful not to go to overtly sexy with your clothing. On the other hand you certainly don’t want to hide yourself in baggy clothes.
Stars – Kelly Brooke, Nigella Lawson, Marilyn Monroe, Coleen Nolan
Best. Work that waist with belts. Wrap and 50s style dresses. V, sweet heart and scoop neck lines. Boot cut trousers and flared trousers. If you have great legs then go with skinny jeans and pencil skirts.
Underwear – Balconette Bras. Bridget Jones knickers (magic) to help if you have a little tummy.
Avoid. Baggy clothes, empire lines. Frills and bows on tops. Flouncy outfits that hide those curves.
So no matter what is on trend or the latest piece of fashion, if you stick to the rules for your shape you will not go wrong.
